Ayurveda: Effective Home Remedies for Cold and Cough in Winter Season

Many people are becoming more susceptible to the common cold and cough during this time of season. Common colds are not dangerous but can make you feel tired, irritable, and sick. This can affect your daily activities. Here are some tips from an ayurvedic specialist to treat cold and flu.

  • The great herb for treating colds and coughs is Giloy's heart-shaped leaves, also known in Hindi as Amrita or Guduchi.
  • Tutsi leaves can increase immunity and delay the inception of infection.
  • Because honey is rich in antibacterial properties, it can soothe sore throats.

We are approaching mid-February, which means it is the season for seasonal change. Many people are suffering from colds and experiencing bouts of coughing. A mild common cold is not usually dangerous but it can make it difficult to do your daily tasks. Other than the seasonal change, there are other factors that can cause coughing and colds. A common reflex reaction to a particle entering your airways is coughing. Common cold symptoms include cough and congestion due to allergies to environmental and seasonal elements.

Ayurveda says that illness can be caused by imbalances in one of the three doshas, pitta or kapha. This is when nasal congestion and cough can be caused by an excess of Pitta or Kapha.

Here are some home remedies to help you get rid of your cold.

Tulsi

Tulsi, also known as "The Queen of Herbs", and "Mother Medicine of Nature" by Ayurveda, improves immunity. Tumulsi leaves increase immunity and stimulate antibody development. It can also delay the inception and spread of infections. Tusi has cough-relieving properties and helps to clear your cough of the gummy mucous. This soothes the airways.

Tulsi - Brahmi kadha

Clean a few tulsi leafs and wash them. Add 5 to 6 peppercorns and 1 teaspoon chopped ginger to a saucepan of boiling water. The mixture should boil for 10 minutes. Finally, add 1/2 lemon juice and a pinch of black pepper to the mix. Let it cool for at least 1 minute before you use it. Enjoy it warm after you have stretched.

Tulsi Tea

Add fresh tulsi to 1 1/2 cups water. Boil for 10 minutes at medium heat. Use a strainer for filtering the water. After adding the lemon juice, mix thoroughly. Warm liquids may be helpful for symptoms such as a cold or a cough.

Giloy

Another great herb for treating colds and coughs is Giloy. Also known as Amrita, Guduchi or Guduchi, the heart-shaped leaves are also used to treat allergies to smoke, pollen, and smog. It is also helpful in treating tonsillitis and common cold. It is also a great plant to increase immunity. Giloy has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. This helps to reduce sore throats, and prevents frequent coughing.

How to make Giloy/Gillian Juice

Take 2 teaspoons of Giloy in warm water on an empty stomach.

Giloy tablet

You can also take one Giloy tablet each morning with warm water.

Honey

Because honey is rich in antibacterial properties, it can soothe sore throats. Honey reduces the severity of coughing by helping to clear mucus from your throat. Honey can also reduce moist coughing and relieves congestion in the chest.

Honey and Ginger Juice

Add 1 teaspoon honey to 1 teaspoon ginger juice. Take one teaspoon of honey in the morning, and one before you go to bed at night for relief from a sore throat or cough.
